NFL Preview: Vikings

Minnesota Vikings:

Cheers: They have a damn good defense. Led by tackles Kevin and Pat Williams, they’re one of the most stingy units in the league against the run. Some high picks at end haven’t panned out, but their Linebackers and secondary are pretty good. The left side of their Offensive Line is one of the best in the league, but the right side leaves something to be desired. Throw in a couple of good backs, and the Vikings have a strong running game as well.

Jeers: They can’t pass. They have one of the worst starting QBs in the league and their receivers aren’t anything to write home about, or even discuss. Brad Childress should know better because of the Eagles’ struggles before they made a commitment to being deep at the position. Williamson isn’t ever going to get it done, and they really don’t have anyone else at the position.

On second thought… Tavaris Jackson is going to need to get much better quickly for the Vikings to get anywhere. Their offense is so one dimensional, and teams are going to be able to stack the box to stop Chester Taylor and Adrian Peterson. The receivers aren’t good enough to make plays on his own, so Jackson needs to get to the point where he can make the guys around him better, and I’m not sure if he’s ever going to do that.

New guy who won’t meet expectations: Bobby Wade. It’s easy to say that their average FA acquisition won’t do anything, but what else am I supposed to say? They got this guy with the intention of improving their receivers, and he’s not any better than what they have now. He’s an adequate depth player and the Vikings need to do better than that when upgrading receivers.

New guy who will meet expectations: Marcus McCauley. He was only a third round pick, but he should get some playing time right away. He fell a bit further in the draft than he should have, but he’s going to be a good player. He’ll eventually challenge Cedric Griffin for a starting spot, and he’ll continue to earn more and more playing time as the season wears on.
